Berbere is a complex blend of spices used in traditional Ethiopian “Wat” i.e, thick stews or curries. The stews are usually served atop injera, a large sourdough flatbread. Berbere mixes vary depending on region or even family but they usually contain chilies, garlic, fenugreek, allspice,basil, ginger, coriander, cinnamon, black cumin, pepper and much more. The flavor is unforgettable, a mix of fiery hot, spicy, sweet and a slight tang.
Berbere spice can be used for:
- Wats: add spices to your sauteing onions to release red colour & flavor
- Grilling: rubbed onto Tofu, Cauliflower steaks or on grilled flatbread
- Deep Frying: add this spice to your wet batter or flour for an extra kick!
- Burgers/Balls: add to your homemade mixture when making vegan burgers and vegan meatballs
